The Maldives – Heavenly Destination
The Maldives are group of islands offering unforgettable nature, serenity and an incredible experience that fills us with peace of mind and relaxation.
The Islands will literally leave you breathless, enchanted and captivated by the pure and authentic exotic beauty. The turquoise clear water in which you can see up to 164ft. (50m) deep, the white sands, the huge, beautiful coconut palms and the blessed serenity will take you to a magical and perfect world far away from the routine of everyday life and you will never want to leave.
The Maldives are islands’ state in the Indian Ocean southwest of India and Sri Lanka consisting of a group of atolls. They islands form the smallest Asian country by population and territory. The official language is Divekhi, and the largest city and capital – Malé.
The Maldivian archipelago consists of 26 atolls uniting 1190 small coral islands. It consists of coral reefs and sandy stripes with incredible vegetation and animals along the 596 miles (960 km) long underwater mountain range rising from the depths of the Indian Ocean. Of these 1190 islands only 203 are inhabited, the largest of which is Malé where the capital and the only port are located. Most islands are surrounded by coral reefs with a very rich and picturesque underwater world, and each atoll has 5 to 10 populated islands and 20 to 60 uninhabited. The Maldives are the lowest country in the world above sea level, at only 7.5ft (2.3m) altitude, but on islands with dunes, the altitude reaches 9.8ft (3m).
The Maldives have 2 seasons – winter and summer, the winter season is rainy. Throughout the year the air temperature varies from 73.4 °F to 91.4 °F (from 24°C to 33°C), and the water temperature is around 80.6 – 82.4°F (27 – 28 °C). Of course, the summer season is preferred and heavier and the prices are higher, respectively, but if you decide to visit the Maldives in the winter you won’t regret it because the rain will not spoil your vacation and you will even save money.
The main religion is Islam which brings with it its own traditions. That is precisely why importing alcohol, pork, weapons for underwater hunting, pornography, religious writings is banned, and it is forbidden to practice nudism and taking a sunbath topless on the beach.
Unlike many other countries in the region, it’s not necessary to get any vaccine for visiting in the Maldives.
Resorts and hotels are the places you’ve always dreamed of but you’ve never seen. They are pricey but you get what you pay for, they offer variety of services and activities you would expect to find an island. The menu includes Asian and European cuisine. The fish dishes are especially tasty, and traditional dishes contain rice, fish curd and coconut oil. Although it is forbidden to bring alcohol to the country, resort restaurants offer it at very affordable prices. The resorts are private, so you are almost unlikely to meet any locals. Although over-water villas, beach bungalows and hotels look traditional they are modernly furnished and equipped with all kinds of amenities and provide the unique opportunity to wake up from the soft warmth of the sun and open your eyes to the inviting ocean. In the Maldives definitely there won’t be a moment in which you’ll get bored. During the day, enjoying the azure beach while lying on a hammock with a colorful exotic cocktail and a camera in hand, you will have the opportunity to watch the exotic flora and fauna of the island.
The Maldives are a surfing destination and one of the most desirable diving destination in the world. The best place to surf is the northern atoll. The southern one is preferred by divers because there are many underwater caves and tunnels, and you can explore the incredible underwater sites and even if you can’t dive, you will learn there because the resorts offer specialized training – the wonderful coral reefs are waiting for you!
Do not forget to take a walk on the islands – as they are small, it will not take you more than 20 minutes to walk around the entire island to explore the amazing nature and feel the warmth of the Indian Ocean.
In the evening you will have the opportunity to go out for a night fishing in certain areas, the setting sun will contribute to the incredible tranquility and you may even observe dolphins!
You can reach the Maldives by a plane which will land in the most densely populated capital of the world – Malé, when you arrive at the airport, you will be granted 30-day tourist visa, then you will be able to head over to the resort counter you have chosen to arrange your arrival to the island where your resort is located. You may have to visit an ATM before continue to your resort island, since on some islands there aren’t any. The local currency is Maldivian Rufiyaa, which is a non-convertible currency and you cannot purchase it outside the Maldives. You can exchange money at the Bank of Maldives Foreign Exchange counter, located in the arrival hall. At the time of writing this article – one US dollar is equivalent to 15.42 Rufiyaa and the exchange rate offered on US$1 and US$5 notes by local businesses may be lower. If you already US dollars with you, you won’t need to exchange money into the local currency because the resorts accept US dollars, you can also pay with credit or debit card.
We recommend you to pack with you the following items before visiting the island:
